What You Need to Know About Contributing to EPF

What You Need to Know About Contributing to EPF 1 - Multiply - Saving & Investing

What You Need to Know About Contributing to EPF

Whether you’re formally employed or working on your own, contributing to the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) is one of the most effective ways to build retirement savings in Malaysia. While contributions are mandatory for employees, voluntary contributions are also open to self-employed individuals, freelancers, and homemakers.

Watch the video below to learn more about EPF contributions.

Who Needs to Contribute to EPF?

If you’re a salaried employee in the private sector, you’re required by law to contribute to EPF. Here’s how it works:

      • Employees contribute 11% of their monthly salary.
      • Employers contribute 12% or 13%, depending on your income level.

For everyone else — including self-employed individuals, gig workers, housewives, and retirees with personal income — EPF contributions are voluntary but strongly encouraged.

Can You Contribute to EPF If You’re Self-Employed or a Homemaker?

Yes. Anyone, regardless of employment status, can make voluntary contributions to EPF to grow their retirement savings. In fact, EPF offers tailored schemes such as:

      • i-Saraan: Designed for self-employed individuals with no formal employer. Contributors may receive a government incentive of 15% of contributions, up to RM250 per year.
      • Self-Contribution Scheme: Open to all Malaysians, including housewives, part-timers, and freelancers.

These contributions qualify for annual EPF dividends and may also offer tax relief.

How Much Can You Contribute to EPF Voluntarily?

For voluntary contributors, the limits are:

      • Minimum contribution: RM1
      • Maximum contribution per year: RM60,000

You can make contributions on a monthly basis or as a one-off payment. There are no fixed schedules — it’s fully flexible based on your financial ability.

What Are the Benefits of Contributing to EPF?

Here’s why contributing to EPF — whether mandatory or voluntary — is a smart financial move:

      • Safe, guaranteed growth: EPF provides a government-guaranteed minimum dividend of 2.5% annually.
      • Tax savings: Contributions (up to RM4,000 per year) are eligible for tax relief.
      • Government incentives: Self-employed contributors under i-Saraan receive matching incentives from the government.
      • Compounding effect: The earlier and more consistently you contribute, the more your savings grow over time due to compounding returns.

How Can You Make EPF Contributions?

Voluntary contributions can be made through several channels:

      • i-Akaun (EPF online platform)
      • Internet banking (FPX)
      • Bank agent counters (e.g., Maybank, BSN)
      • Any EPF branch counter

To register for i-Saraan or self-contribution, fill out Form KWSP 16G (M) and submit it at an EPF branch.

FAQs: All You Need To Know About EPF

      1. Is EPF contribution mandatory for self-employed individuals?
No, it’s voluntary. However, contributing helps secure your retirement and qualifies you for annual dividends and tax relief.
      2. What is i-Saraan and who can apply?
i-Saraan is a voluntary contribution scheme for self-employed individuals without a formal employer. You must be a Malaysian citizen and an EPF member under age 60.
      3. What’s the maximum amount I can contribute to EPF voluntarily?
The annual cap is RM60,000 across all voluntary contributions.
      4. Are voluntary contributions eligible for tax relief?
Yes, you can claim up to RM4,000 per year for EPF and life insurance combined under personal tax relief.
      5. Can I contribute to EPF if I’m a homemaker or retired?
Yes. As long as you are an EPF member, you can make voluntary contributions at any age.
      6. How do I check my EPF balance?
You can check your EPF savings via the i-Akaun portal or mobile app.

      Final Thoughts

EPF isn’t just for salaried workers — it’s a powerful savings tool for everyone. Whether you’re self-employed or in between jobs, contributing even small amounts regularly can go a long way toward securing your financial future.
