What Government Insurance Schemes Can You Get?

What Government Insurance Schemes Can You Get? 1 - Multiply - Insurance, Blog

The COVID-19 crisis has made us more aware that insurance is important. If you get a major illness, treatment in a private hospital can be expensive. Although public healthcare is cheaper, there are also certain types of treatments or surgeries that the government doesn’t fully pay for, so you’d still have to pay some money for treatment at a government clinic or hospital.

You might also have to come up with some of the payment yourself even if you’re on your company’s medical insurance plan. So, if you don’t have your own medical insurance, you could end up in a lot of medical debt.

If you have family who depend on you financially, you might also want to be prepared in case something happens to you and you can’t work anymore, or if you pass away. In this case, you’d want to get a life insurance plan.

But what if you can’t afford your own medical or life insurance plan? Well, you could look at one of the insurance plans introduced by the government, mySalam and Perlindungan Tenang, which are provided by insurance and Takaful companies.

      What is it?

      mySalam Perlindungan Tenang
mySalam is a free medical Takaful scheme for those with critical illnesses. Currently, mySalam is provided automatically to Bantuan Sara Hidup (BSH) recipients who fall under one of these categories:

      • Married individuals between the age of 18-65.
      • Single individuals between the age of 40 and 65 earning less than RM24,000 a year (RM2,000 a month).
      • Disabled individuals between the age of 18 to 65 earning less than RM24,000 a year (RM2,000 a month).
Perlindungan Tenang is a life and general insurance/Takaful protection scheme aimed at helping those in the B40 group. The amount of coverage will depend on how much is paid in premiums.

      How does it work?

      mySalam Perlindungan Tenang
      • If you’re registered under BSH and have gotten the BSH cash assistance, you should’ve been notified via an SMS about your mySalam coverage. If you didn’t get notified, you can send an email to info@mysalam.com.my or call the mySalam careline at 1-300-888-938.
      • The scheme only can be used at government or approved military and university hospitals. Click here to see the full list of hospitals.
      • You can get almost all Perlindungan Tenang plans completely online or with any registered agent. Some banks such as Agrobank also sell these plans. You can find out where to get plans here.
      • All plans are supposed to be easy to understand with a simple claims process. Usually, completed claims are processed and paid within 5 working days.

What type of protection can you get?

      mySalam Perlindungan Tenang
      • Medical coverage
      • mySalam provides a one time cash payout of RM8,000 if you’re diagnosed with any of the 45 critical illnesses and RM50 daily for up to 14 days a year if you have to be hospitalised.
      • The plan now also covers COVID-19, so if you’re hospitalised you could also make a claim of RM50 per day for up to 14 days. You can also make a critical illness claim if you face health complications from COVID-19 that cause one of the 45 critical illnesses covered under mySalam.
      • Life insurance

If you take a life insurance plan, your dependents will get a sum of money (depending on your coverage) if you pass away or become permanently disabled.

Click here for a full list of life insurance plans under Perlindungan Tenang.

      • Family Takaful

Family Takaful is a Shariah-compliant life insurance plan  where your dependents will get a sum of money if you pass away or become permanently disabled.

Click here for a full list of Family Takaful plans under Perlindungan Tenang.

Read this guide if you’d like to understand more about Takaful and how it’s different from conventional insurance.

      • General Insurance

These plans usually cover things like fire insurance for your home. Click here for a full list of general insurance plans under Perlindungan Tenang.

How much are the premiums/Takaful contributions?

      mySalam Perlindungan Tenang
      Free
      • Life insurance: From RM6 up to RM25 per month, with a coverage ranging from RM10,000 up to RM100,000.
      • Family Takaful plans: From RM39 up to RM195 yearly with a coverage of RM7,500 up to RM40,000.
      • General insurance: About RM75 ringgit per year for coverage amount to RM10,000.

      What you need to know

      mySalam Perlindungan Tenang
      • Check if you’re registered for BSH.
      • If you want to make a claim, go to the mySalam claims portal, which you can also access through the mySalam website. For a critical illness claim, you’ll need your doctor to fill in a form for you to send in. If you’ve also been hospitalised, you’ll need to send in a different form.
      • If your claims are approved, you’ll get your payment within two weeks of sending all your documents. The money will be sent to the bank account you’ve registered under the BSH scheme. So if your bank details aren’t updated under the scheme, make sure you update it!
      • Under Budget 2021, mySalam coverage was expanded to also cover medical devices such as heart stents and prosthetics.
      • Make sure you deal only with authorised agents or companies. If you’re dealing with a company, check the links provided for the approved life insurance companies and general insurance companies. You can also click here to check what Takaful plans are available.
      • Compare a few plans to see which plan suits you best according to your budget. If you have family who depend on you financially, be sure to take a plan with larger coverage.
      • Nominate one of your dependents to be your beneficiary. If anything happens to you, they will receive the money. Make sure you inform whoever you have chosen!
      • Ask your agent or company to explain your rights and responsibilities and be sure to understand it.
      • Learn how to make a claim, and teach your beneficiary. How to make claims will depend on which insurance/Takaful provider you get your plan from.
      • Under Budget 2021, eligible B40 recipients can get a RM50 voucher to buy Perlindungan Tenang products from 1 April 2021. The stamp duty exemption for Perlindungan Tenang products with an annual premium or contribution value of up to RM100 has also been extended until 2025.

Even though these government insurance plans will help you if you can’t afford regular insurance/Takaful plans, you should know that these plans might not give you as much coverage and benefits as regular insurance/Takaful plans. Still, it’s better to have some insurance than none at all, so if you can’t afford  it or are just learning about insurance, then find out if you can get mySalam or Perlindungan Tenang to be sure you have some medical and financial protection!
